Reel to Real 3: Slumdog Millionaire

This Sunday at a Mosaic near you!
Reel to Real 3 ...

REEL 2 REAL 3 continues this week with 2009 Academy Award winning picture of the year... Slumdog Millionaire - an incredible rags to riches story that traces the life journey of two brothers and a friend.

The REEL 2 REAL series uses movie themes as parables to help us understand truth from the scriptures about our selves and the world we live in. This Sunday, we go from two brothers on the screen to two brothers in scripture - Cain & Abel. A fresh perspective on this old tale will focus on two personal issues:
What does God want from me?
Does God punish us for our mistakes?

Facebook Jesus: It's Not Over
Easter 2009... what does it mean to you? The Easter holiday has become many different things today, and it can be easy to lose site of what it's all about. Here's what Easter means to us at Mosaic: We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. As an act of incredible love, Jesus died for our sake... a tragic, yet heroic sacrifice that could have the potential to focus on the dark side of humanity, where we hurt those we love, feel rejected, maybe even guilty for our own selfishness... yes, and the realist says this is the way of all things, to finally come to an end. But the message of Easter is - It's Not Over! Jesus' resurrection gives us hope and symbolizes how God's power exceeds all the things over which we feel defeat. Our marriage - is not over, our dreams - are not over, the life we've longed for - is not over! Receive this message and share it with someone else by inviting them to join us for Easter next week. Easter is also our birthday! This Sunday marks 5 years that Mosaic Seattle has been meeting. How is your life different? Tell that story!

Facebook Jesus: Mark Chapter 1
chapter 1
A couple of important issues to consider:
Early in Jesus' ministry, he healed many people. A very personal example was when he went to Simon's house. (Jesus later calls Simon, Peter meaning rock, because of because of his rock-like belief in Jesus). While at the home, Jesus healed Simon's mother-in-law. The whole town saw this and began to bring people in a continuous stream of need.

Two interesting things happen...

First, Jesus warns the demons he is rebuking to not reveal his identity. Why would he do this? I would love to hear your thoughts about this.

Secondly, Jesus gets up early and goes off alone to pray. When his followers find him they inform him that plenty more people have come to find him. The implication is probably that they want to be healed or they want to watch the healings. Here's the twist - Jesus says it's time to move on to other places so that he "can preach to them, too. That is why I came." Wow! What does that mean? What do you think about that? Why would Jesus pass up an opportunity to get a crowd together?

I'll give my thoughts later... you first!

A Life That Matters: A Change You Can Believe In
Who Cares? Be honest, don't you sometimes wonder? When people talk about "God stuff" and when you read about religion, don't you ever want to ask, "so what?" or "who cares?" Well... you should. The message of Mosaic and, we believe, the message of Jesus, is that you have worth and were meant to live a life that matters. Perhaps an even better question is, "what do you care about?"

This week, you might get some answers about your own life... "does anyone care?" "What difference does it make?" Join the conversation this week at Mosaic, as we seek to move away from meaningless religion and live a life that matters.

A Life That Matters: ReNew
The heroes of the Book of Nehemiah are the people... moms, dads, shopkeepers, teachers, builders, civil servants... everyday people. They're heroes because they collectively become aware of the need for full life through transformation. Many of us sense that we were meant for something more but we fear doing anything about it because change is scary.

A Life That Matters: ReVision
The funny thing about vision is as you get closer to something, the view often changes. History records claim that a man named Nehemiah and an extraordinary group of people built a wall. Once that was accomplished, the perspective changed. People looked at "the wall" for a long time, and then began to look at their hearts. What they saw led them to see a new future for themselves and for humanity.

Join the conversation this Sunday at Mosaic, and ReVision your future.

A Life That Matters: ReStructure
As we continue our journey in the historical book of Nehemiah, our story parallels what is happening in Jerusalem. We are getting a picture of what our hearts, minds, and future should look like. This Sunday the conversation is about restructuring our lives, moving forward, and making course corrections. A big question for each of us - are we trying to recapture a great moment from the past? Are we trying to hold onto what we have at this moment? OR ... Are we moving forward into the future?

A Life That Matters: Focus
Do you have spiritual or emotional ADD? Sometimes, maybe in church, we have a moment of clarity, a glimpse of the future. We might even have the idea, "I know what to do!" Nehemiah is trying to build the wall! He has to work with all kinds of people - matching there skills with what needs to be done. God is also at work, building His vision in the world - does your vision align with what He's doing? When we compartmentalize our life, our lives are not fully integrated. Past series:

What Love Is...
The 49 days before Easter have been celebrated and observed by some Christian traditions as the season of Lent. The Lentil period begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes with Holy Week or "Passion Week."

This naming was intended to capture an element of Easter that illustrates the "Passion" Christ displayed by offering his life for us. This kind of love seems different than the everyday kind... or does it? How can an execution, a death be a picture of love?

Many of us seek to discover what love truly is. On the Sunday after Valentines Day, February 17, Mosaic begins a new teaching series called "what love is..." Each week, we'll search for true love in all of it's raw beauty.

Revolution
Who are you becoming?
Most of us have been trying to figure out who we are... trying to find ourselves... getting in touch with our inner being... as if it is a secret out there somewhere.
How's that working out for you?
It seems that we are resigned to being who we are, and we spend much of our time, love and resources trying to change our circumstances. What if we have it backwards? What if, for the most part, we cannot choose or control how life will come at us?
When God walked the earth as Jesus, He told us to be good soil, be a faithful servant, and the true friend - as if we could choose to be those things!
He implied that each of us can choose the kind of person we will be.
If that is true then... who are you becoming?
Join Mosaic for a new teaching series called "Revolution!"

Among Us
Many of us have a picture of God as far off and in accessible. We create elaborate systems of faith that offer a faint hope of being able to connect... to get a small prayer through... maybe. In addition, we create rituals and jump through a lot of religious hoops in an effort to appease a god that is probably not that happy with us.
How's that working out?
Jesus seems different.
In scripture, we see a creator that doesn't remain aloof but instead, actually interacts with men and women in space and time, right here where we live!
In fact, one of the most radically new spiritual ideas at the time is the concept that, for awhile, God walked among us. Could this be true? Did He actually become one of us?
Join Mosaic for an honest look at the humanity of God, as the man Jesus.
5 very human moments:
Nov. 25 - Perspective, explaining the big picture on the way to Emmaus.
Dec. 2 - Death, facing the end just like the rest of us.
Dec. 9 - Decision, being honest about fear and hope.
Dec. 15 - Desire, experiencing temptation in the desert.
Dec. 23 - Birth, vulnerability for the sake of others.

Core Values
It just doesn't matter...
You might spend hours researching nutrition and exercise... but that will not make you healthy.
You might wear a yellow bracelet... but that doesn't stop cancer.
You may know more than anyone else about food production and hunger in Africa... but that doesn't feed a child.
You may believe in God... but it doesn't really change your life, or anything else.
None of that matters unless you care about it.
You may believe something to be true, but it does not impact your life, or anyone else's, unless you care about it.
What really matters to you?
Could someone observe your actions, how you spend your time and resources, and make a pretty good guess at the things you care about most?
Just look at our day planners and our check books and you get the picture of what our core values are. You may not be aware of them or you may not have consciously decided them, but each of our lives reflect our core values.
What are yours?
Ask someone that knows you.
At Mosaic, we have chosen 5 core values to protect what we, as a community, care about.
We have a statement of belief, some core convictions, but if you really want to know who we are - no, change that - if you really want to know who we are becoming, check out our core values. page.
Hard Core, man.
That's what matters!
